Tip 8 We can create solutions by the way we communicate.
If you want to align with your most inspired results you are going to need this 1 special communication tool.
I was sitting with a CEO of a hospital, his name is Kevin. My job was to coach him on a short speech to his team of doctors and administrators.
I asked him, “So how are you hoping to transform the hospital. I want my team to wake up inspired to make a difference. So I had to ask him; “What wakes you up every morning?”
I wasn’t expecting his answer.
“Many years ago at one of my hospitals in the US, a patient was given an injection and died of an over dose. This was my darkest of days. I can still picture face of the widow when I broke the news to her. I wake up every day making sure this mistake, never repeats.
I could tell this was a haunting memory but I also knew this was a story that would connect him to his team.
I wanted to know more.
“Kevin tell me what positive changes occurred as a result of this?”
He was a bit taken back by the question but he has been around the block before so he knew the angle I was purposing with my question.
“We changed our medication administration policy so that doctors never deliver injections alone, kind of like having a copilot on an airplane,” he explained.
“Kevin, this new policy must have saved lives.”
“Indeed Oudi, I’d imagine hundreds.”
I was curious about what happened to the doctor who delivered the injection. It turned out that he went on to become the head US national safety.
Most people forget that people connect so deeply with stories, more than a set of instructions that say do this and don’t do that. Stories touch people because stories are about people.
“Kevin this is what needs to go into your speech. You have material here to inspire you team.”
Here is how Kevin addressed his team.
“Have you felt like you didn’t want to wake up and go to work? Well there was a time when I didn’t want to show my face in the community. A patient died at one of my hospitals was killed from a lethal injection and I was embarrassed. For years I have been calling this a mistake. But the other day I had coffee with a friend and he got me thinking about all the good that came out of this tragedy. And it dawned on me, there are no such thing as a mistake only lessons. So I don’t want you to wake up uninspired, I don’t want you to wake up fearing making a ‘mistake’. I want you to wake up inspired about making a difference.”
